About Us
The cornerstone of our community vision is based upon respect: respect for oneself, respect for one's neighbors, and respect for the community as a whole. In order to demonstrate respect, community members are expected to take responsibility for their decisions and actions. We all must recognize that our decisions and actions will affect the students, partners, and children within the community. We must also take responsibility for addressing behavior that we consider unacceptable. We can do this by bringing our concerns to each other and the Northern View Community staff. The Northern View Community is a unique living experience for undergraduate and graduate students and families that agree to share in this vision of community. To see our community experience first hand, find us on Facebook.
Northern View Community has a team of professionals and student staff ready to help you. Our staff is focused on making your experience at NIU productive and comfortable.

Hello! My name is David E Duma and I am very happy to be a part of Northern View Community! I am from Vernon Hills, IL., one of the northern suburbs of Chicago. I received my bachelor’s degree in English and Spanish Foreign Language and Literature in 2009 from right here at Northern Illinois University. I continued my education at NIU by getting my master’s degree in Adult and Higher Education in 2011. In my free time, I like to read, listen to music, play drums, take care of my fish tank, and ride my bike. Through the course of my career at NIU, I realized that I love working with students and am beyond excited to be a part of the students’ college experience here at Northern View Community. I have called NIU and DeKalb my home for a long time now and hope that you come to enjoy your experience here as much as I have!
Community Development Assistant & Staff Assistant: Community Development Assistants are students just like you and have been hired by the University to assist residents with daily concerns. They are available at different times during the day and night. Community Development Assistants work to ensure that the community environment is suitable for learning and living. Community Development Assistants are an excellent resource and are well-informed about services available to students. They also create exciting educational and social events for your complex.
Community Council: Community Council is an organization under the Resident Hall Association. Our mission is to actively and faithfully represent the Northern View community residents to the Northern Illinois University administration and other organizations interacting with and affecting on-campus apartment life. Our goal is to promote a socially and educationally enriching environment through diverse programming for the NVC residents and for campus, and to encourage and develop new student leaders. Community Council provides excellent opportunities to engage our dynamic group of students and equip our residents to be strong campus leaders. We currently meet every Thursday night in the Community Center at 6:00 p.m.
