Are you student teaching or completing an internship outside of DeKalb County?
If you have been accepted for a student teaching assignment, nursing clinical experience or academic internship outside of DeKalb County for the semester and would prefer to live in another location to commute to that experience, you may request to be released from your current Housing & Dining contract by submitting a letter on department or organizational letterhead signed by the faculty coordinator verifying that you have a full-time internship, clinical experience or student teaching assignment outside of DeKalb County that spans the time of the semester for which your contract release is requested. Remember you need to send in a contract release request form with the letter from the sponsoring department or faculty member.
Are you participating in a Study Abroad Program?
If you have been accepted into a Study Abroad academic experience or internship don’t forget to wrap-up things on campus before your leave the country. You may request to be released from your current Housing & Dining contract by submitting a copy of your acceptance letter from the Study Abroad program verifying the dates of your experience. Remember you need to send in a contract release request form with the letter from the Study Abroad Program.
Have you been academically dismissed?
Because students who are academically dismissed are not all notified of their academic status until after the standard December 15 contract cancellation deadline, they are granted a courtesy deadline extension until January 11, 2013. If you are academically dismissed and are not appealing your academic dismissal, you must remove your belongings from the residence hall January 9th from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. and January 10th - 13th from 9 a.m. – 6 pm. to avoid being billed for any spring semester room and board charges. Hall staff will not be available before January 9th to assist students in checking out.
You should remove all of your personal belongings from your room, and check out with a hall staff member who will collect your room key. Failure to return your room key when you vacate your room will necessitate changing the room lock, with those charges being billed back to you.
In the event that you are appealing your dismissal, you may keep your belongings in your room until your appeal is reviewed, or until the end of the first week of the semester, whichever comes first. Please be aware that room and board charges will be incurred beginning when the residence halls reopen January 10, 2013. It is very important that your appeal process be resolved before the end of the first week of the semester, January 18th, at which time the extension you have been given for cancelling your contract will expire and you will be assessed the $100 late contract cancellation fee, as well as your prorated room and board charges for spring semester. If you know you are leaving, remember to send in your contract release request so that we can start processing the paperwork to stop your spring billings now.
Are you withdrawing from the University?
Be sure to make the necessary academic notifications. http://www.niu.edu/withdrawals/index.shtml
Remember you need to remove all of your personal belongings from your room, and check out with a hall staff member who will collect your room key. Failure to return your room key when you vacate your room will necessitate changing the room lock, with those charges being billed back to you. Your billing does not stop until you have turned in your key and vacated your room. Be sure you send in your contract release request.
