The following scholarships for majors are available through the Department of Geography:

Applications for these scholarships may be obtained from the Department of Geography, Davis Hall, Room 118, and are available at the beginning of the spring semester. Completed forms must be returned to the Department of Geography by early- to mid-February


Elizabeth J. Schwantes Scholarship

In January 2005, Elizabeth J. Schwantes established an endowment through the NIU Foundation to fund an annual scholarship award in Geography. The purpose of the award is to reward students that excel in academics, by providing financial assistance. Awards for each academic year will be announced in early May of that prospective year; award payments will be processed after the start of the fall semester in September.

Award Criteria

  • NIU GPA ≥ 3.5
  • Geography major
  • academic merit only
  • ≥ 36 semester hrs earned at NIU
  • ≥ 9 semester hrs earned in GEOG
  • may be re-awarded, once

The Elizabeth J. Schwantes Scholarship is awarded on the basis of merit without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, sexual orientation or disability.

Richard E. Dahlberg Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is established to provide recognition for outstanding students in the area of cartography / geographic information systems (GIS) and to honor the memory of Dr. Richard E. Dahlberg, a former faculty member at Northern Illinois University. The purpose of the scholarship is to provide financial assistance to a student enrolled at Northern Illinois University. Awards for each academic year will be announced in early May of that prospective year; award payments will be processed after the start of the fall semester in September.

Award Criteria

  • NIU GPA ≥ 3.2
  • pursuing degree in Geography
  • academic emphasis in cartography, mapping sciences, GIS
  • academic merit (1st) and need (2nd)
  • preference to those completing degree in coming year

The Richard E. Dahlberg Scholarship is awarded on the basis of need and merit without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, sexual orientation or disability.

William Morris Davis Graduate Research Award 

This award was established to provide graduate research support to students pursuing a graduate degree in Geography at Northern Illinois University.   William Morris Davis, for whom Davis Hall is named, is recognized as one of the fathers of North American geography.  A geographer, earth scientist, and meteorologist, Davis initiated some of this country’s first graduate programs in Geography and was a major proponent of the field research method.  This award provides graduate students in Geography with support for the acquisition of specialty data, equipment, supplies, or services related to their thesis, non-thesis or dissertation research. Awards are made twice each academic year.

Award Criteria

  • Graduate student in Geography at NIU
  • admitted to candidacy for MS or PhD degree and engaged in thesis research
  • critical need (1st) and academic merit (2nd)
  • non-consumable award purchases remain property of the Department of Geography, NIU

Nancy C. Wick Outstanding Senior and Jack Villmow Outstanding Junior Awards
