Advising at NIU

How NIU Functions (Advising)

NIU has six academic colleges that grant undergraduate degrees. These are the Colleges of Business, Education, Engineering & Engineering Technology, Health & Human Sciences, Liberal Arts & Sciences, and Visual & Performing Arts. Each college is divided into schools or departments, such as the School of Art, the Department of Psychology, and the School of Nursing.

If you have not yet chosen a major, your advisor will be from the Academic Advising Center. This is a unit that advises students who are deciding on a major and college.

College and departmental advisors will assist you in academic planning and course selection, and will help you stay current with academic policies, procedures, and deadlines. After you begin classes, you’ll be responsible for scheduling regular appointments with your academic advisor. We suggest that you meet with your advisor at least onece every semester before registering for classes for the next term to stay on track toward your goal of earning an NIU degree.
