Associate Professor of German
I studied in Berlin at the Pädagogische Hochschule and the Technische Universität before coming to the US on a DAAD scholarship. After receiving a BA in English (University of Houston) and an MA and a PhD in Linguistics (Rice University), I accepted a position at the Department of Foreign Languages & Literatures at Northern Illinois University, where I am now Chair.
I have published two books and several articles in a variety of journals, among them Journal of Pragmatics and Unterrichtspraxis. Over the years I have presented over 60 papers and am very busy with conducting workshops. At NIAATG I have served two terms as Program Chair, then Vice President, President and Past President. In 2013 my latest book was published: Deutsch als Fremdsprache – Prüfungstraining - AP®, written with V. Langeheine, N. Nagel, S. Piwek, J. Stark, and F. Stübing. With the same collaborators, I also received a STEM Articulation Grant from the Netzwerk Deutsch, which resulted in 131-page workbook with STEM-related teaching units. I am a recipient of the Goethe-Institut/AATG Certificate of Merit. As a member of the Goethe-Institut Trainernetzwerk, where I regularly attend workshops, I am a frequent presenter at local, regional, national and international conferences. I offer workshops especially on the following topics:
Classes I teach regularly
German language acquisition classes at all levels
Together with colleagues, I am a founding organizer of the Northern Illinois College German Immersion Day. The third Immersion Day will be held at College of DuPage on April 18, 2015. I am an active member of the following organizations:
