It’s OK to be undecided
Your first years of college can be a valuable time to explore our undergraduate degree programs
Choosing a college major is a big decision, but it’s OK if you’re undecided. At NIU, we can help you turn that uncertainty into a decided advantage.
First, you should know, it’s very common for new students to be unsure.
Some research even suggests that students who start college without declaring a major experience some benefits. At NIU, that first year or two of college can be a valuable time for you to explore our undergraduate degree programs, and we’re here to help.
Our team at the Academic Advising Center is laser-focused on helping you identify your interests, values and skills. We’ll assist you when selecting courses to help you explore, and will even suggest majors or career paths that play to your strengths.
Thoroughly investigating your options will help you:
- Increase the probability that you will make a good choice.
- Learn how to research career-path opportunities, evaluate alternatives and make decisions.
- Find out how you can customize and strengthen your education by participating in NIU PLUS, adding a minor or pursuing a double major.
