Learn to play the steelpan in a fun ensemble setting! This instrument has a sound like no other and lends itself to the performance of many different types of music. Instruments in one of the six voices that range from soprano to bass are assigned to students, who learn to play three to four pieces in the traditional calypso style, as well as classical, rock and rhythm and/or blues. Each semester, students will have two opportunities to perform at concerts with other ensembles such as All-University Steelband, Steelpan Studio and NIIUkulele Ensemble. No previous experience on the instrument is needed, but it is recommended that students be able to read music.
