Winds Day

NIU Winds Day is a festival for those who play flute, oboe, clarinet (including bass clarinet), horn or bassoon and enjoy playing and learning about their favorite instrument. Founded in 2002 as the NIU Clarinet Cornucopia, NIU Winds Day focuses on a different theme each year. Information and photos from past events can be found at Gregory Barrett's website

The festival Winds Day Ensemble returns under the directorship of Patrick Sheehan. All participants are invited to join the ensemble, which rehearses twice during the day.

All events take place in the Music Building on the campus of Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Illinois.

Preliminary Schedule

Special Features

Winds Day Ensemble

All participants are invited to join the Winds Day Ensemble, which rehearses twice during the day and performs as part of the afternoon concert. Be sure to note your instrument on the registration form. Registrants interested in participating in the ensemble will receive an email from director Patrick Sheehan with pdf's of the music.

Performances

  • Concert: NIU Faculty Woodwind Quintet performance at 10:15 a.m.
  • Ensembles performance: NIU Winds Day Ensemble and visiting woodwind and horn chamber ensembles perform at 4:00 p.m. If your chamber ensemble (for example: flute duo, clarinet choir, woodwind quintet) is interested in playing in this concert, submit a brief written performance proposal to Dr. Barrett by January 15 (receipt deadline). Master Classes

  • Morning Master Classes: Separate classes for flute, oboe, clarinet, horn and bassoon.  If you would like to perform in a master class at 11 a.m., contact Dr. Barrett with your request by January 15. Include which instrument you play, the number of years you have been playing and preferred repertoire for the class.   • Afternoon Chamber Ensembles Coaching: If your ensemble would like to receive coaching from the NIU Faculty Woodwind Quintet, contact Dr. Barrett with your request by January 15. Include the instruments in your ensemble, your grade(s) in school or experience level, and preferred repertoire for the class.   • Afternoon Master Class: Separate classes for flute, oboe, clarinet, horn and bassoon.  The afternoon like-instrument classes will focus on the NIU Winds Day Ensemble repertoire. Everyone plays. 

Maps and Parking

NIU Winds Day is held in the Music Building on the campus of Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Illinois, 65 miles west of Chicago and 45 miles southeast of Rockford. The Music Building is located on Lucinda Avenue and can be found on Mapquest.com by using the address 400 Lucinda Ave. Directions to the campus and maps are available on this website. Parking in campus lots is free on weekends; do not park in restricted spaces.

Meals

Lunch is on your own. A list of restaurants will be available at the registration table.

Registration

You may register using the registration form. Mail forms and check to: Office of External Programs, College of Visual and Performing Arts, 1425 W. Lincoln Hwy., NIU, DeKalb, IL 60115-2828. Checks should be made payable to to Northern Illinois University. Forms with credit card payment may be faxed to (815) 753-8372.

Cancellation Information

If weather or an emergency forces the closure of NIU, this event will be canceled and registration fees will be refunded. Call the office at (815) 753-1450, Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., We will do our best to contact registrants directly by email or phone. If after hours, check the website and our voicemail. If the event has not been canceled and an individual decides not to attend for any reason, including weather, no refund will be made.

NIU reserves the right to substitute guest artists and change the schedule.
