For school jazz bands

Hear and be heard by other high school jazz bands, by NIU School of Music faculty, including jazz studies coordinator Reggie Thomas, and our guest clinician Tim Warfield!
Each band performs a concert, maximum time 20 minutes, in the Concert Hall. This performance is followed by a 20-minute clinic session, to be conducted by the NIU faculty members. Total time for each band: 40 minutes. All students are invited to individual instrumental clinics conducted by the guest clinician and the NIU faculty. Outstanding soloists will receive scholarships to this year's Jazz Combo Day.

Tim Warfield Biography:
Tim Warfield, Jr., a native of York, Pennsylvania, has appeared on nearly 70 recordings and made several TV appearances, including NBC’s “The Today Show.” He’s appeared on stage with such musical legends as Dr. Donald Byrd, Jimmy Smith, Shirley Scott, Dizzy Gillespie, and Isaac Hayes. He’s also recorded and performed with several of the new generation of giants including Stefon Harris, Nicholas Payton, Terell Stafford and Christian McBride.
Warfield’s first recording, A Cool Blue, was selected as one of the Top 10 recordings of the year in The New York Times Critics Poll, as was his 1998 recording, Gentle Warrior (featuring Cyrus Chestnut, Tarus Mateen, Clarence Penn, Terell Stafford and Nicholas Payton), proclaiming him possibly the most powerful tenor saxophonist of his generation.
In 2011, Tim received an Artist Award created by Mayor Kim Bracey of York, PA, to honor natives of York who have gone on to personify excellence in the fields of both the Performing and Visual Arts.
In 2013, his self produced recording “Tim Warfield’s Jazzy Christmas,”on the Undaunted label, featuring trumpeter Terell Stafford, vibraphonist Stefon Harris, pianists Cyrus Chestnut and Neil Podgurski, bassist Rodney Whitaker, drummer Clarence Penn, Percussionist Daniel Sadownick, and vocalists Joanna Pascale and Jamie Davis, was selected by music critic Ben Ratliff, as one of the top 20 Holiday listens for 2013, in the New York Times.
Tim’s latest recording released on the Criss Cross Jazz label in 2015, is entitled SPHERICAL, dedicated to the iconic jazz pianist Thelonious Monk, features trumpeter Eddie Henderson, pianist Orrin Evans, bassist Ben Wolfe and drummer Clarence Penn.
Tim currently serves as both a board member and music committee chairperson for the long-standing jazz organization, The Central Pennsylvania Friends of Jazz. Tim is currently an Artist in Residence at Messiah College and an adjunct professor at Temple University.
