UNIV 101: University Experience

UNIV 101: University Experience provides an invaluable introduction to NIU. These elective, one-credit, 11-­week courses are designed to help you adjust to NIU and develop the skills necessary to succeed in college and beyond.

  • Practicing success strategies through collaborative learning activities
  • Learning how to use essential online tools such as MyNIU, Blackboard and NIU student email
  • Understanding where and when to go for help
  • Gaining vital skills in writing, communication and critical thinking through the Common Reading Experience
  • Networking with NIU faculty, staff and peers while making new and maintaining existing friendships

Courses have an average class size of 19 students to foster close student interaction. Our faculty and staff are committed to helping you succeed. 

Course Information 

You can enroll in a UNIV 101 course on MyNIU.

You will need a permit number to enroll. You can contact us to receive a permit number by phone, (815) 753-0028 or by e-mail, To receive a permit number, you will need to provide your name, your Z-id and a phone number where you can be reached.

*Who can take UNIV 101 in Spring 2018:

  • Students can retake the course if they received a D, F or W in fall 2017
  • Second-semester freshmen who did not take the course in their first-semester.
  • New frist-year freshment students
