The EMS Model

Most environmental management systems are usually built on the P-D-C-A (Plan-Do-Check-Act) model that involves:

  • Planning, including identifying environmental aspects and establishing goals (Plan),
  • Implementing (or doing), including training and operational controls (Do),
  • Checking, including monitoring the system and taking corrective actions (Check), and
  • Reviewing, including progress reviews and taking actions to make the needed changes (Act).

As it can be seen from the figure, the model is a continuous one and requires ongoing activities to manage the environmental activities of an organization. Each of the four phases of the model can be divided into several smaller steps that organizations can follow for implementing EMS.
