IncidentLightning Strike Causes Phone Outage
Date Occurred: 4/17/13 - 4/19/13
Location: NIU's Main Campus and Wellness & Literacy Center in DeKalb, NIU-Hoffman Estates, NIU-Naperville and NIU-Rockford
Details: A lightning strike at approximately 8:30 a.m. Wednesday knocked out telephone communications systems on Northern Illinois University’s DeKalb campus as well as facilities in Hoffman Estates, Naperville, Rockford and the NIU Wellness and Literacy Center. The university’s network has not been compromised as a result of the lightning strike, and internet and email communications remain uninterrupted. Mobile communications have not been affected. Additionally, VOIP communications capabilities remain intact.
Safety Information: People receiving this message are advised to be alert and aware of severe weather in the area. NIU’s Department of Police and Public Safety are still able to respond to emergencies. In the event of an emergency, please dial 9-1-1.
Additional Information: The campus community will be advised when services are restored.
UPDATE: 4/19, 9:25 a.m. - Campus telephone service restored

4/18, 5:45 p.m. - As of 5 p.m. today, about 50 percent of campus telephone services had been restored. However, voice mail and a few other phone features are not yet available. 

4/18, 10:45 a.m. - About 40 percent of phone service has been restored on campus.

4/17, 4 p.m. - The NIU PD’s Late Night Ride Service will not be operational this evening (4/17) due to severe weather conditions.

IncidentReport of Off-Campus Home Invasion/Robbery
Date Occurred: Sunday, February 17, 2013
Location: 800 block of Fotis Drive
Details: Early this morning, DeKalb police received a report of a home invasion and robbery in an apartment on Fotis Drive. According to DeKalb police, three suspects allegedly pushed in the door of the apartment, entered the apartment and threatened its male occupant. No weapon was displayed. Police believe this was not a random act, and the suspects may have been known by the occupant of the residence. 

DeKalb Police have two persons of interest in custody.

IncidentReport of Off-Campus Home Invasion/Robbery/Attempted Sexual Assault
Date Occurred: Thursday, February 14, 2013
Location: 900 block of Lucinda Ave.
Details: Early this morning, DeKalb police received a report of a home invasion and robbery in an apartment on Lucinda Avenue. According to DeKalb police, two suspects allegedly knocked on the door of the apartment, entered the apartment and displayed a handgun before threatening a female occupant with a knife. Police believe this was not a random act, and the suspects may have known the occupants of the residence.

Fall 2012

IncidentOff-Campus Armed Robbery
Date Occurred: Sunday, December 30
Location: Hillcrest and Annie Glidden Roads
Details: Around 6:15 p.m., an armed robbery occurred at Casey’s General Store. The suspect displayed a knife and told the clerk to hand him the money from the register. Once the register was open, the offender reached in to take the cash out of the register and proceeded to exit the store. At this point no injuries have been reported.
Offender Description: The offender was described as a white male in his 20's wearing a grey hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans, white shoes, and a blue bandana over his face.

Safety Information: Witnesses described the offender's last known direction of travel as heading northwest. If suspicious activity or individual matching the suspect’s description are spotted, report it immediately to the police.
Update: CASE RESOLVED  - 1/3/13
On January 2, 2013, DeKalb Police arrested  a 20-year old Sycamore man in connection with armed robberies at the DeKalb Casey's General Store and Thirsty Liquors.


IncidentOff-Campus Burglaries
Date Occurred: Friday, December 7
Location: 800 Block of Regent
700 Block of Fotis
1000 Block of Aspen
Details: Around 8:00 p.m., multiple residences reported to police to have been burglarized at some time earlier in the evening. Several more residences had criminal damage to property, possibly the result of attempted burglaries.
Offender Description: Two suspects wearing dark clothing and heavy winter hats with ear coverings were pursued by police headed south after being spotted in the 1300 block of Eco Park. Suspects were then chased into a wooded area adjacent to campus by police and are still at large.

Safety Information: Students residing in these areas are reminded to lock their doors to protect their belongings. If suspicious activity or individuals are spotted, report it immediately to the police.
UPDATE: A total of twelve apartments in the neighborhood had a window either forced open or broken out, with access gained and items taken from at least three of the apartments. Following an investigation, Latrell C. Jones, 20, and Tre Holbrook, 20, of 902 Ridge Drive in DeKalb were arrested later in the morning on December 8 and each charged with two Class 1 felony counts of Residential Burglary, and one Class 2 felony count of Attempted Residential Burglary. Additional charges are pending as further information and evidence is discovered and evaluated.

IncidentOff-Campus Criminal Sexual Assault
Date Occurred: Friday, Oct. 26, 2012
Location: 900 block of Normal Rd.
Details: At approximately 5 a.m., NIU police was notified of a possible criminal sexual assault that may have occurred around 3 a.m. The victim reported being battered and forcibly restrained.

The victim was taken to Kishwaukee Community Hospital for care.
Offender Description: The suspect is a black male--5’9-5’11”, average build, 180-200 lbs, 20-22 years old, medium complexion--wearing blue jeans and a dark colored shirt.

IncidentOff-Campus Assault/Robbery
Date Occurred: Tuesday, October 23, 2012
Location: 900 block of Lucinda Ave.
Details: An assault and robbery occurred at approximately 7:30 p.m. in an area just north of the campus and the Village Commons Bookstore and south of University Plaza.  An NIU student reported to police that he was jumped by three suspects who physically assaulted him and robbed the victim of his cell phone.   
Offender Description: The suspects are described as three black males.  NIU Police report that the suspects were last seen heading north.  No additional description of the suspects is available at this time.
Additional Information: Both NIU Police and DeKalb Police are investigating the incident.  NIU Police advise citizens to temporarily avoid the area, use caution, be aware of your surroundings and report any suspicious behavior to police. Further updates will be made as more information becomes available.

Updates: 10/24/12 – 3 suspects taken into custody, interviewed, one arrested

Three suspects were taken into custody by DeKalb Police in the early morning hours Wednesday. After each were interviewed, one suspect — Malik T. Stovall — was arrested. Attempts to identify a fourth suspect are still in progress.

IncidentOff-Campus Robbery
Date Occurred: Friday, September 28, 2012
Location: Intersection of Greenbrier and Russell Roads
Details: An off-campus robbery occurred at or near the intersection of Greenbrier and Russell Roads in the city's Greek Row area on the city's northwest side at approximately 4:20 a.m.
Offender Description: The two suspects are described as two African-American males. One is described as 5'10" wearing all black. The other is described as approximately 6'0" wearing a red and white jacket. NIU police report that the victim was not an NIU student.
Additional Information:
DeKalb Police actively investigating this case, and no arrests have been made at this time. 

Police advise to use caution when traveling in the area and to be alert when walking at night: avoid unlit areas, avoid walking while intoxicated, travel in groups whenever possible, don’t wear headphones, and don’t become too engrossed in your phone or other electronic devices. Awareness is a critical key to crime prevention.

Updates: 
10/3/12 - CASE RESOLVED

The second suspect has been arrested for the robbery that occurred on 9-28-12 at 5:09AM in the 800 block of Russell Road.  In that incident, a male victim reported being beaten and robbed of his wallet by two individuals that he and his girlfriend had met earlier in the evening.

On 9-29-12 at 4:17AM, DeKalb Police arrested and charged Anthony Phillips,23, with robbery after a patrolman noticed a person matching the description of one of the suspects in the University Village apartment complex on Russell Road.

On 10-2-12, a warrant for robbery was obtained for the second suspect, John Lee Adams Ill, 22, of Chicago.  He was identified through a prior police contact he had while staying at an apartment at University Village.  Shortly after the warrant was obtained, Chicago Police arrested Adams while investigating an unrelated street gambling incident.  Adams was also wanted on an outstanding warrant for a bank robbery that occurred in Indianapolis, as well as a motor vehicle theft warrant that occurred in Bloomington, IN. Adams is now in federal custody for the bank robbery charge.

There are no other suspects in this case.

 


IncidentOff-Campus Attempted Armed Robbery
Date Occurred: September 14, 2012
Location: 900 block of Ridge Drive
Details: Two suspects attempted to rob a United Parcel Service (UPS) driver in the 900 block of Ridge Drive on city’s northwest side. The suspects claimed that they had a weapon though according to police no weapon was displayed. The suspects fled scene and were last seen near buildings in the 800 block of Ridge Drive.
Offender Description: The suspects are described as two black males in their mid-to-early twenties. One of the suspects is approximately 5’5” to 5’10” in height, wearing a black sweatshirt. The second suspect is approximately 5’10′ to 6’0″ in height and was wearing a dark jacket with white, leather-like sleeves
Additional Information: DeKalb Police report that while the suspects remain at large there is currently no known immediate danger to the general public. IncidentOff-Campus Armed Robbery
Date Occurred: September 9, 2012
Location: 1100 block of Varsity Blvd.
Details: On 9-9-12 at 3:52 AM, the DeKalb Police Department received the report of an armed robbery that had just occurred.  A male and female in the rear parking lot of1120 Varsity Blvd.reported that they were approached by two male black subjects.  One of the suspects displayed a handgun and the female ran.  The male victim was robbed of a purse that he was carrying for his female friend, a phone, and keys.
Offender Description: Suspect #1:  black hoodie, short hair, about 5’09” and 150-160 lbs.
Suspect #2:  grey sweatshirt or hoodie, about 5’10” and 150-160 lbs.
