University Diversity Committees and Presidential Commissions
For more than 20 years, the Committee for Multicultural Curriculum Transformation has promoted multicultural curriculum transformation. These efforts have served as a valuable model to advance the university’s mission. In 2014, NIU outlined recommendations in the Diversity and Inclusion Task Force Report that reflected an increased emphasis on equity and provided the impetus to realign this committee's goals.
To better reflect these diversity-driven goals, the Committee for Multicultural Curriculum Transformation and Academic Diversity Programs Advisory Committee were restructured into a single committee—the Committee for Academic Equity and Inclusive Excellence. This committee focuses on reducing student academic equity gaps, creating expanded opportunities for student/faculty research with greater collaboration from the academic diversity centers, as well as developing a sustainable model for NIU's human diversity requirement in compliance with the Illinois Public Act 87- 581.
Under the guidance of the chief diversity officer, each college, department and unit strives to create a diversity strategic plan with parameters for accountability and assessment.
The president has several commissions in place to advise him on the issues that relate to many diverse groups on campus. Each commission makes recommendations on behalf of the entire university community. This includes academic programs, student services, workplace matters, university policies, and the general campus environment.
