About

The Women and Gender Advocacy Alliance (formerly Women’s Rights Alliance) of Northern Illinois University is open to all students and is dedicated to the fulfillment of its mission through quality programs that serve the NIU and DeKalb communities. Our focus is on the status and wellbeing of women and girls, and we are equally focused on improving relations between the sexes. In this way, we contribute to the ongoing effort of society to build a more equitable and civil world for all people. It is our vision that Northern Illinois University, with the aid of our organization, continue to develop as an outstanding leader in the preservation and improvement of women’s rights and safety.

*The Women and Gender Advocacy Alliance (WGAA) is sponsored by the NIU Center for the Study of Women, Gender and Sexuality

History:

The Women and Gender Advocacy Alliance was founded in 1989 as the Women's Alliance and received Student Association recognition in March of that year. In 2006, the group changed its name to the Women's Rights Alliance, in order to encourage more diverse membership. Then, in 2017, the name was changed to the Women and Gender Advocacy Alliance, in an effort to be more inclusive and encourage a more diverse membership.
