Start NIU (August) This event is meant to welcome adult/non-traditional, commuting, off-campus and transfer students and their loved ones. It is a great opportunity for students who have children, live outside of DeKalb, are transferring, or returning from a break in education to learn about services available to them at NIU. It is also a great way for students to connect with others who may be from or near their home area, get insightful information from our staff and current students while enjoying great music, good food and giveaways.
Summer in September – This event provides an informal introduction to two NIU student service offices: Office of Student Academic Success and Off-Campus and Non-Traditional Student Services. Students can learn what these offices do to support the student body, enjoy free food, music and good company.
Off-Campus Housing Fair (October) - This event takes place every year in October. It gathers and features local housing and community representatives for students to obtain quality information about the various housing options available in the DeKalb area. Attendees are able to engage with a multitude of NIU staff and community representatives to get their questions answered about living on or close to campus.
Appreciation Week (March) – We devote a week of different activities and events to show appreciation for our off-campus and non-traditional student populations. Activities vary from year to year, but focus on pampering students and allowing them a few stress-free moments in their busy schedule.
Family Fair (April) - This event is a resource fair for NIU students who are parents, and their loved ones. It allows students to learn more about the services available to them as they balance pursuing their academic goals with raising a family. Representatives from the Department of Human Services, Family Service Agency, DeKalb County Health Department, Child and Family Connections, Center for Family Health, 4-C, Youth Service Bureau, YMCA, Hope Haven, community churches and a number of NIU partners participated for student benefit. Students can gather additional information, get burning questions answered by NIU staff members, and find a little respite from their busy day. Additionally, we encourage NIU students and participants to bring their children as well to participate in a number of the activities and games provided at the event.
Thanks for a Great Year! See You All in August!
