The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at NIU is committed to furthering the learning opportunities of our students. Part of that commitment is to Engaged Learning. The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching has recognized NIU as one of the best universities in the nation for engaged learning and engaged learning initiatives.

Engaged Learning is a type of learning that takes place outside of the classroom, allowing students to get hands on experience in practicing the discipline that they are studying. It draws on and reinforces classroom programs of study, and is shaped by NIU faculty and staff.

Engaged learning opportunities can take many forms, but here are a few that can be found within the college:

   

Dean McCord has challenged the college with his vision that every student in the College have the opportunity for a disciplinary-based engaged learning opportunity.
