Resources for Students with Children
The process of coming to college and setting your family up in a new place can be challenging to say the least! This page is meant to assist you with this task. Below are several tips that you may find helpful..
Make multiple copies of birth certificates, social security information and related paperwork that you turn in when you apply for housing, childcare or subsidies. This will help you in the long run.
Be persistent! Keep in mind that you may have to contact rental agents, subsidy counselors or other service providers a number of times to get the information you need. Don't be afraid to actively follow up and seek out the assistance you need.
"I am calling to make sure that you got my application for..."
"I am calling to check on the status of my application..."
"I am calling to check and see when my application was sent out..."
Get a notebook & write down the names of the people you talked to in the various offices. Make sure to make a note about what you were told and then date your entry. This can save you a great deal of time.
Be as polite and patient with the people you work with even if it seems that they are having a bad day because they may be the individuals who process your paperwork.
Keep in mind that your CHANCE counselor is available to support you as you go through this process. Please don't be shy about getting the support and encouragement you need from your CHANCE counselor. We are only a phone call away 815-753-0201.
