Bradford H. Pillow, Ph.D.

Professional Background

For over 30 years, Dr. Pillow has conducted research investigating cognitive development in children from early childhood to adolescence, with a primary focus on the development of social cognition and metacognition. His interest in developmental psychology began as a student at the University of California, Berkeley, where he received a B.A. in Psychology in 1982. Dr. Pillow graduated from Stanford University with a Ph.D. in Psychology in 1986. After spending two years as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Minnesota’s Center for Research on Learning, Perception, and Cognition, Dr. Pillow taught at the University of Pittsburgh as a faculty member in the Department of Psychology. He joined the Department of Psychology at Northern Illinois University in 1995. Dr. Pillow has served as a consulting editor for Child Development and Genetic Psychology Monographs, and currently is editor for the Journal of Genetic Psychology.

Research Interests

Dr. Pillow’s research examines social cognitive and metacognitive development from early childhood to adolescence. He has investigated developmental changes in children’s ability to infer another person’s visual perspective, knowledge, and beliefs, children's understanding of cognitive activities, such as attention, inference, comprehension, and memory and children’s explanations of interpersonal events. In addition, Dr. Pillow has investigated children’s ability to monitor their own cognitive abilities, especially the contributions of children’s monitoring ability to the acquisition of concepts of cognitive processes In recent research he also has investigated young children’s use of gender as a basis for making inferences about the characteristics of others.
