Academic Biography:

Q. Where is your study area located? Southeast Asia-Sabah, Malaysia

Q. What is your focus of research? IThe focus of the research is ethnic identity in Sabah especially related to language use and theory.

Q. Why did you choose NIU? I was a pervious student at NIU and had earned a minor in Anthropology. My involvement on campus and taking Anthropology courses lead me to want to continue at NIU for the MA in Anthropology. Primary influences were the support and interest inspired by Anthropology and History faculty. Also, NIU has a Center for Southeast Asian Studies. the CSEAS has numerous resources and expers in SEAsian Studies.

Q. Who is your advisor? Why did you choose to work with this professor? Sue Russell. I choose to work with Dr. Russell because of her expertise in Southern Phillipines especially in Sulu and Sabah Malaysia. Since most of my research may involve informants in markets, Dr. Russell's expertise in economic Anthropology is also helpful.

  • Summer 2011 - Malay language and 2nd semester studying in Malaysia.
