  • $40 non-refundable application fee
  • Payment information (credit card or other acceptable payment method)

Please note: If you've applied already and need to make any changes to that application (major change, address change, pay application fee, etc.) please contact the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at (815) 753-0446 or There's no need to submit another application for these situations.

Application Instructions for Undocumented Students

Northern Illinois University welcomes all students, regardless of citizenship or residency. Illinois General Assembly Public Act 093-07 provides that undocumented students are classified as Illinois residents for tuition purposes if they meet specific conditions. Please see our application instructions for more information.

Application Fee Waiver - Transfer Applicants

To qualify for a waiver of the undergraduate admission application fee, a transfer student must submit the NIU Application Fee Waiver Form (PDF) and have an Expected Family Contribution (EFC) of $0 on his or her Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) report or be a part of a college access program (i.e., TRiO, Upward Bound, etc.) at his or her Illinois public community college.

Campus Safety

NIU provides information regarding campus security, personal and fire safety, including topics such as: crime prevention, emergency response procedures and crime reporting policies, in addition to crime and fire statistics for the most recent three calendar years.

Get more information about campus security safety in the Annual Security Report. Contact the University Police and Public Safety Department at 815-753-9628 to receive a hard copy. To receive a hard copy of the Annual Fire Safety Report contact the Environmental Health & Safety department at 815-753-0404.
