Marlene Thomas

Like many NIU alumni, Admissions Counselor Marlene Thomas was the first in her family to attend college. And, she received financial aid and worked both during the school year and in the summers to help pay her tuition. That helps her understand just some of the questions prospective Huskies have as they embark on their college search.

"It’s so important to make a choice that is the best fit academically and financially," she says. "And, you want to have a sense of community too."

A Chicago native, Marlene earned a B.S. in family relations from NIU and an M.A. in school counseling from Lewis University. That educational background, and professional experience in early childhood education, career counseling, finance, and school counseling, drew her to NIU to continue her professional career.

"It’s exciting to help students and families explore career possibilities and realize their aspirations," she says. "And, at the practical level, we work with them to navigate the selection and application process."

She says NIU’s campus and general location is one of its hidden benefits.

"Our campus and community offer many outdoor activities and events," she notes. "And, our close proximity to Chicago offers our students multiple options as well."
