Admissions Counselor Jair Herrera is proud to be part of a strong team working with and recruiting future Huskies. As a Huskie himself who earned a B.S. in finance, he says that gives him a connection to prospective students.

"I enjoy sharing my personal experiences at NIU with students," he says. "Drawing on my time studying at NIU helps me have a bigger impact."

Jair was born in Toluca, Mexico and has much in common with prospective NIU students. He was a transfer student, coming to NIU from Moraine Valley Community College in Palos Hills, Ill., and a first-generation student at NIU. And, he switched majors at NIU from math to finance.

"My experiences help me connect and interact with our students," he says. And, he’s continued his studies since joining the admissions team and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in data analytics.

He encourages students to complete the FAFSA early in their search process and, once on campus, to take advantage of all NIU has to offer.

"I love the campus community at NIU," he says. "There are so many organizations and activities that it’s easy to get involved inside and outside the classroom."
