Daniel Tamayo

Admissions Counselor Daniel Tamayo knows the challenges first-generation students can face. The Chicago native and son of Mexican immigrants turned those challenges into opportunities, graduating from NIU with a bachelor’s degree in general studies. Along that journey, he found his interest in higher education and the impact it can have on young people.

"I believe everyone has a right to continue their education after high school," he says. "I’m passionate about informing students and families about those options."

Today, Daniel works with prospective Huskies to emphasize the benefits of an NIU education and the literal and figurative doors it can open. "Helping others continue their personal growth and meeting their goals is a privilege that I value deeply," he says. "As a prospective student, I felt welcomed and at home at NIU. I strive to create that same experience for everyone I interact with."

He notes the welcoming atmosphere both at NIU and in the DeKalb area makes being a Huskie unique. "I truly believe we’re welcoming to anyone and everyone," he says. "When we talk about diversity on campus, you not only hear about it, but you also see it.  Our students make ever-lasting relationships and friends that continue long after leaving DeKalb."

Daniel reminds incoming students that challenges provide opportunities to learn and grow, but they don’t have to face them alone. "We provide resources and staff support so our students feel at home and to help them succeed," he says. "We help make those experiences easier than they may seem. That’s why we’re here."
