Through the College's Engineers in Residence program, graduate students partner with regional companies to gain valuable professional experience while still in school.
The College boasts three state-of-the-art labs sponsored by industry leaders: the Baxter Reliability Lab, the Mitutoyo Metrology Lab and the Automation Direct Lab.
Home to NIU’s National Safety Education Center (NSEC), one of 24 OSHA-licensed centers across the country. NSEC provides valuable OSHA training for general industry and construction.
The College's Supermileage Team took 1st place among U.S. universities in the 2010 SAE International Supermileage Competition and third place overall.
Students in the Department of Mechanical Engineering boast a pass rate of 91 percent on the Fundamentals of Engineering (EF) exam.

The College of Engineering & Engineering
Technology encourages students to use classroom knowledge to tackling real-world
problems. Through state-of-the-art laboratories and partnerships with industry
businesses, students are well-prepared by the time they enter our global
workforce.
NIU's Undergraduate Engineering Program was named among U.S. News & World Report's "Best Colleges 2013" at schools where the highest engineering degree offered is a master's degree.
- All programs are fully the leading organizations in their respective fields, including the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) and the Association of Technology, Management and Applied Engineering (ATMAE).
- The College offers 17 professional organizations,
including: Society for Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE), National Society
for Black Engineers (NSBE), Society of Women Engineers (SWE), Engineers without
Borders (EWB), Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and
American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE).

In 2010, the College received more than $3 million
in research funding.

Technology: Recognized by the National Science Foundation
for his research on remote laboratories
- Dr. Abhijit Gupta, Professor in the
Department of Mechanical Engineering: Received federal funding to research the treatment of tremors in a person’s hands and arms

Reinaldo Moraga, Assistant Professor in the Department of Industrial and
Systems Engineering: Worked on research for Argonne National Laboratories
and various industry members, including Bergstrom, HydraForce and Nestle
