DeKalb — Students looking for a major-related career experience prior to graduation or to jumpstart their career plans are encouraged to attend the career fairs.
The Internship Fair is Wednesday, Oct. 8, and the Job Fair is Wednesday, Oct. 22. Both fairs are from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Northern Illinois University Convocation Center. There is no fee to attend these events. A résumé is required at the registration table for admittance to the fair.
These are premier events for many NIU students providing opportunities to meet face-to-face with a wide array of potential full-time and internship employers prior to graduation. A convenient shuttle service will be available for the Job Fair and the Internship Fair. The shuttle will run from the Holmes Student Center (Normal Road side) to the Convocation Center.
These events provide an opportunity for NIU students to attend one of the region’s largest collegiate career fairs. More than 200 employers attend, looking to hire interns and upcoming graduates enrolled in any NIU majors.
Career fairs are student-centered learning events. Employer representatives provide students with information about job openings, internships and the interview process.
In addition to learning about employers, students who attend career fairs gain the experience of approaching employers and presenting themselves as prospective employees in their chosen fields. Students should bring plenty of résumés to leave with the employers they meet. Dress for each event in business attire.
Students are encouraged to research participating employers before the career fairs either online or at the Career Resource Center. Information about the fairs, finding a job or an internship, writing a résumé or preparing for an interview can be found at the NIU Career Services Web site at www.niu.edu/careerservices. Students can schedule appointments with career counselors on NIU’s campus or by calling (815) 753-1642.
The NIU Career Resource Center in Room 235 of the Campus Life Building provides résumé writing, practice interviews and researching employers through the Web server Victor eRecruiting.
For a list of job fair preparation workshops, call (815) 753-7238. Walk-in student résumé critiques are available at the Career Resource Center. Career Services is a Division of Student Affairs and is located in Campus Life Building 220.
