DeKalb — Mold and water stains spot the walls. Old heating units are exposed, some occasionally spewing steam and water. Students lug laptops to a cramped computer lab situated in an old janitor’s closet, where a few must sit on the floor.
NIU’s Stevens Building is in dire need of renovation and repair. The 1959 building has topped the university’s list of capital improvement projects for a decade.
NIU officials and students will join Jan Grimes, executive director of the Illinois Capital Development Board, for a 2:30 p.m. Monday press conference to spotlight the critical needs of NIU’s Stevens Building.
Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich has recommended $20.8 million to renovate the Stevens Building and for other needed remodeling and repair work at NIU.
